Welcome to the Upper Key Stage 2 (Year 5 and Year 6) webpage.
September 2023
We have enjoyed our first week back and getting to know our new year 5/6 teachers Miss Kinsella, Mr Lai and Mr Morrell. We are having a great start to the term and are looking forward to our trips to Eden Camp, where we will learn lots about WWII, and to the Year 6 residential trip to Robinwood. Our history topic this term is all about WWII and we will be learning about materials and their properties in science. We are looking forward to a variety of topics planned for the rest of the year and are aiming to take advantage of many opportunities for exciting and varied learning experiences. Our wonderful teaching assistants – Mrs Corscadden, Mrs Overton, Mrs Steel, Mrs Meadows, Mrs Hornshaw and Mrs Kuttivijay – will be supporting in class and working to develop children’s learning both individually and in small groups alongside the class teacher.
At the beginning of the year, we held the elections for the team captains and it was great to see how many of our Year 6 pupils put themselves forward for this important role within the Academy. Our team captains are just beginning to learn the ins and outs of the post and are

Reading widely and fluently is the key to success when accessing our broad and balanced curriculum. The children study reading daily and are given a home reading book linked to their reading ability. They need to read daily and to comment in their reading record, which should be brought into the Academy every morning. Your child will also need to practise the spelling rules which can be found on the school website along with the class flyer (see below) and make sure that they are familiar with their times tables.
Each class will be doing outdoors PE on net/wall games as follows:
Miss Kinsella Wednesdays
Mr Lai Thursdays
Mr Morrell Fridays
Your child will need to wear the Academy PE uniform for these lessons but can bring in an extra sweatshirt for colder days. We are also aiming to do regular skipping sessions to boost our fitness.
Our community link is Shelter; we plan to investigate and explore opportunities to support the work of this important charity.
